Job description: The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center is looking for a competent, self-motivated, and dynamic candidate to join as the Researcher – Groundwater Hydrology. The Researcher – Groundwater Hydrology will be part of a new one CGIAR Research Initiative on TAFSSA: Transforming Agri-Food Systems in South Asia. The researcher will play a key role in the TAFSSA activities, particularly in Work Package 2 and Work Package 5. The researcher may also be involved in other related Initiatives and/or bilateral projects of IWMI India office. Working with the project leadership as well as with other CGIAR colleagues and national and international partners, the researcher will be part of a multi-national and multidisciplinary team that is contributing toward building resilience and mitigating environmental impacts in South Asia’s agri-food systems.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide research support and conduct research in groundwater hydrology, groundwater modelling, water resilience and climate adaptation, climate change impact on groundwater and groundwater management under present and future drivers of change.
  • Conduct field based studies and investigation in hydrogeology, including a good understanding of field geology
  • Develop and apply groundwater models at appropriate scales and resolution to address real-world problems
  • Collect relevant primary and secondary datasets to improve the reliability of the models
  • Develop scenarios of interventions that affect water supply and demand that account for future climate and socioeconomic changes
  • Maintain a high level of research output for various publication outlets, including peer-reviewed journals within the wider scientific community, on topics of close relevance to the scope of work undertaken.
  • Support the IWMI India Country Representative in managing the IWMI and OneCG national, regional and international project portfolio.
  • Identify new research trends and niches and develop multi-year, multi-partner proposals for innovative research.
  • Lead and contribute to proposal writing and fundraising opportunities for bilateral and multilateral funding sources.
  • Communicate information on relevant projects and research results and breakthroughs for communication to donors, research users, partners, networks and policy platforms.

Requirements

Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • PhD or Masters in the field of hydrogeology or environmental sciences/ hydrology with specialization in groundwater hydrology/geology with specialisation in groundwater or a closely related discipline. Ph.D. will be preferred.
  • At least 2-3 years of work experience in hydrogeology, groundwater hydrology, hydrologic modelling, groundwater management etc.
  • Competency and experience in the use of integrated groundwater and surface water models
  • Groundwater management, climate change
  • Interest and experience of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Proficiency in industry standard groundwater modeling software such as SWAT-MODFLOW or others.
  • Ability to use and collect field data to generate robust conceptual and quantitative models.
  • Demonstrated field experience in hydrogeological investigations, field geology, data collection and monitoring
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages, and an ability to develop or adapt computer programs to enhance modeling capability.
  • Strong analytical skills and a learning attitude
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral skills in English
  • Demonstrated competency in the application of GIS and Remote Sensing technique.

This is a nationally recruited position and only candidates who are eligible to work in India will be considered. The duration of the contract will initially be for a period of three years with the possibility of extension.
