Background

The WHO South-East Asia Region is endemic for 12 neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and bears the highest burden of these diseases among all WHO Regions with at least one NTD endemic in each of the 11 Member States. Not only do NTDs cause long-term morbidity and disability, but some of them are also fatal if untreated, leading to a heavy burden on the social and economic development of the affected countries.

Eliminating NTDs is one of the Regional Flagship Priorities in WHO SEARO since 2014, which contributed to substantial progress. However, there are still many works to be done to achieve the goal and milestones set in the new Global NTD Roadmap 2030. One of the priority works to accelerate control and elimination of NTDs in the Region is to sustain political commitment and mobilize resources to help countries deliver necessary interventions in an efficient and effective manner. As part of the Regional advocacy efforts on NTDs, SEARO CDS NTD Unit plans to publish a Regional NTD Newsletter semi-annually, highlighting major countries activities and implemented on NTDs in the last 6 months and disseminate widely to Member States, donors and partner agencies.
